A driving mission for Lions International has been services for the blind, vision health, eye research, and vision and health screenings. In 1925, Helen Keller challenged Lions International to be Knights of the Blind and since accepting that responsibility, Lions have been the global leader in supporting these programs.

Diabetes is the number one cause of preventable blindness in the United States. Through research support, community outreach and education, health screenings, and support programs, Lions serve to reduce the scourge of diabetes in people’s lives.

Massachusetts is home to the world leaders in changing the pathology of this disease.

The environment affects everyone and Lions, through their community action, work for environmental preservation and restoration that affects people’s lives.

Because Lions are organized as community-based service groups, Lions are some of the first to respond to natural and man-made disasters, giving immediate aid to those in need and providing longer-term assistance for recovery.

Lions Clubs International Foundation is a critical element of providing immediate response for disaster relief.

Coping with cancer profoundly affects many lives with scary and daunting challenges. This is particularly true when cancer afflicts children. Lions are committed to helping support children and their families coping with cancer.

Hunger and food insecurity affect many communities, even when unseen. Through food drives and banks and partnerships with community groups and resources, Lions serve to alleviate hunger and community food insecurity.

Through many developmental and support programs, Lions serve to make a difference in children’s lives. This service includes the Lions International Peace Poster and Essay Contest, Lions Quest development program, scholarships, community youth programs in athletics, music and civic service, youth camps, and mentorships.
